i don't know if i'm in this major nesting phase or what, but since returning home, i have done nothing but clean, organize, re-organize and clean some more.
our goodwill pile is crazy huge in the garage, and i have to stop and wonder what we were doing with so much stuff to begin with?
i like to be organized, and with kids, you kind of have to be.
i am working at being better and better with my organizational skills...apparently that's a skill that you are born with, and i just wasn't born with it.
when elsa came home, i started the color system with the kids.
really, i should have started this when i had 2 kids because it makes my life way easier.
each kid gets their own color.
caedmon is green.
hadley is pink/red.
elsa is orange.
milo is blue.
kohen is yellow.
new baby will be purple.
they each have their own cups/plates/forks/spoons/bowls/towels/pillow cases/toothbrush cups...etc. in their color.
this has made life way easier as i'm no longer saying "whose is this cup? who was drinking from this last? who used this towel? etc."
their shoe bins are even labeled in their names...in their colors.
brilliant?
yes, i think so.
it literally took 2 seconds for the kids to catch on to the colors.
ask any of them and they know whose color is whose.
and don't try to give them someone else's color or all hell will break loose.
and actually, anything that is orange, elsa thinks is hers.
i walk out with an orange shirt on and she says "mommy, you wearing elsa's shirt?"
"no elsa, this is mommy's shirt".
we are in the store and she sees an orange anything and she is convinced it's hers.
so, yah.
if we're ever at your house and something orange is missing after we leave, you know who took it.
so, in the midst of chaos with children, this has given me a little peace.
what do you do to help with organization?
i'd seriously love to hear.

what a great idea! and little elsa and i would get along great. i have a whole room in my house that would be all hers...orange:) i love me lots of orange!
ReplyDeleteyou sound like your doing great:)
Where did you get the cups and bowls from and how about that awesome shoe organizer? Jill at www.campfunk.blogspot.com
ReplyDeletefunk50@charter.net
I would love to do this!
We do the colors too, but only with bath towels. Thank you for taking it to the next level for this family. Awesome idea. We already have those cups and plates too from Ikea. BTW, Love that store!!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant.
ReplyDeleteduh. you're a genius. when I have more than one kiddo I am totally using this system.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had some organization ideas for you, but currently I'm terribly unorganized. I'm working on that...
Okay, love the Elsa-orange issue. Super cute. :)
ReplyDeleteWe do something similar. We use ball jars as drinking glasses...I've found they hold up the best. I slip a colored silly band around the rim. Each kid has a color. It's helped a ton.
ReplyDeletenice work, mama :)
ReplyDeleteI have done this with my boys, except Porter (our first) was Blue and when Hudson came around he was Green. P's room was blue, H's room was green. P's scrapbook was blue, H's scrapbooks were green.
ReplyDeleteHOWEVER.... Once P was about 3 (when H was only 1) , he became obsessed with the color green. Still is. So, we swapped it up and now P is green and H is blue. We actually have these Inchbug Orbit Labels (P's is green and H's is blue) and that helps on cups that aren't "their" colors. http://www.inchbug.com/bumpyname-orbit-labels-custom-orbit-labels.html
I love your shoe organizers. If we ever get to finishing our mudroom, I want to do something like that with cubbies.
Jill... the cups are from Ikea. THey're super cheap... like maybe $2 for the whole set!
ReplyDeleteyeah get the towel thing but never thought of taking it to that level but I love it.
ReplyDeletemy big organising thing is having a bag rail in our garage where all the school bags etc live. the kids all have their own hooks, see here: http://www.alittlespacelikehome.com/2011/06/organising-kids-bags.html
and you'll see I talk about how I fill their bags straight away, e.g. dancing finishes, I wash uniform and put it straight back in the bag. Reduces cupboard chaos. lol.
the color system photos melt my heart. what a sweet and adorable way to keep things organized.
ReplyDeletegreat idea! i just may have to use it myself. at our house we keep from collecting too much junk by cleaning out and getting rid of toys at every birthday and christmas.
ReplyDeletebrilliant.
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea! Definitly one I will store in the back of my head for future use. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love that idea! It seems like it would solve so many issues! :)
ReplyDeleteThat has been on my list of things to do...forever!
ReplyDeleteLove it. It reminds me of my life growing up...I was the oldest of six kids. There were six of us in six years of which two of my sisters had also been adopted!! Crazy...we also had a day of the week. Who gets to pick out a movie? Whose day is it? Who gets to help mom make cookies/dinner, etc? Well, I do because it's wednesday and today is my day. It eventually turned into who gets to sit in the front seat, too. No one need bother to ask if it wasn't your day. These are the brilliant things mom thinks of when you're trying to survive. Welcome to that elite club of geniuses. :P Marissa
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! I'll have to remember these when we have/get more kids.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Elsa in the orange! so much so that our sectional is orange!
what a GREAT idea! We dont have kiddos yet but I am going to keep this in mind!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! I'm saving this idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm so loving this color-system! I hope I'll still remember it when I have kids some day!
ReplyDeletehow cute about elsa with the orange!! sounds like she is talking well and adjusting well!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for a picture of their room!
tara
Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I don't have kids yet, but I'm certainly making notes. LOL @ the little orange thief!
ReplyDeleteYou have got to be the smartest mom ever! I'm totally going to (steal) borrow this idea! My kiddos are always fighting over which color plate/cup they are using and I think assigning colors would alleviate this problem. I love the color coordinated bins for their things as well! Why didn't I do this like 5 years ago?!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that after you have your baby, you will have the entire rainbow in your house. What will happen if (when?) baby #7 comes? You will sure have to get creative with colors... aquamarine? magenta? chartreuse?
ReplyDeleteAwesome way to organize and keep track of kiddo things, by the way! :)verba
p.s. I should note that you will receive all credit for this brilliant idea...no idea stealing without credit!
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS! I actually started doing this with my identical twin boys when they were babies, so I could tell them apart... Bottles, clothes, pacifiers, Kaden was in blue, Kaleb in green... It stuck, now that's how their teachers tell them apart shoes, backpacks, lunches and folders... And it is their favorite color (the power of persuasion)! Great post!
ReplyDeletethis is seriously an amazing idea. I might have to steal this idea for my boys. Thanks for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteI love how many colors you have :) I color coded my kids from birth and never thought much of it until a friend of mine told her child, "don't use that cup, emma is pink."
ReplyDeleteI think that that is an absolutely genius idea and I will definitely be using it with my kids once I have another one. We are planning on having 4 kids so this will work perfectly for us! :) Thank you for the amazing idea.
ReplyDeletecups/bowls/shoe organizer are all from IKEA :)
ReplyDeletei love this... its easy! i have it pretty easy right now and have been able to get away with just one pink and one blue with my two kiddos but when this little boy is born in a few months i will have to switch it up! we have a basket by our front door that the kids put their shoes in. with just the two its not so bad but i would like to do one for each. they also have their own hooks above the basket for their coats/bags. i want to do their initials or maybe number them? not sure.. great ideas.. i love your blog!
ReplyDeletewow. this is seriously brilliant. i will definitely be using this when i have more than one kid!
ReplyDeletehttp://breatheandhush.blogspot.com/
I love me some clear containers. i use them to organize most everything in my home. i REALLY love them for the kids toys. they can see what is inside and i can too. sure, things get mixed up often, but it is really simple to put back where it belongs.
ReplyDeletesee example here

Awesome idea! I love that it will take care of any possible arguments over who gets to have which color of cup or whatever...marvelous!
ReplyDeleteSo does anyone in your house get accused of eating Elsa's oranges? :)
Yes, brilliant! I'm not sure how many kids we'll end up with but I'm filing this away along with the family closet idea and dot system of marking hand-me-down clothing/shoes that I saw on another blog by a mom of 4.
ReplyDeletethis is brilliant! even with just four kids it's driving me insane trying to keep track of whose things are whose. that elsa is a crack up. i love hearing your stories about her. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Question: What do you do if you have little friends over??
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing job you've done! I have no children, and have never had to go through anything like this, but I'm still a mess! You would think with just my husband and I it would be easy to keep up, but I still somehow manage to create chaos!
ReplyDeleteare those shoe bins ikea? of course they are. we only have 1 shoe bin in our mud room that we all rummage through when leaving the house. it works, but we need a better system. i did get a new planner i love this year...the well planned day. that is about all i have to add at this point. i need get back into my organized self.
ReplyDeleteassigned colors has made my life easier with four kids, too! we don't have much storage in our house, so many of their toys are in rubbermaid bins in the garage, which allows me to rotate them. one day will be a little people day, few days later, that bin goes out and the truck/train bin comes in, and so forth. keeps the kids on their toes with toys...there's always that "aha" moment with them when they see another bin being brought in.
ReplyDeleteI am a little bit obsessed with organizing stuff, great idea!
ReplyDeleteorganization station!
ReplyDeleteJust the mention of organization makes my heart skip a beat!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a clever idea. I will definitely remember it when I have more children.
ReplyDeleteI just love this idea and adopted it today! Went to ikea and all and am so excited about it working in our busy little house!
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing your heart. i'm sad that you were not better prepared by your agency/friends who have adopted. bonding and attachment doesn't happen overnight! i'm wondering if you did the hague training because it seems like they talked about it quite a bit. adoption in a BIG deal... hard and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWe did something like this when adopting our twin sons a few years ago. We had to teach them how to take care of their own things (a new concept to them) AND solve the no one but us could tell them apart problem.
ReplyDeleteLando got blue (toothbrush, comb, notebook, backpack, etc) and wore something blue when we were out in public. Ditto Han Solo, but with red.
Same deal though, hand either something in the wrong color and get ready for an ear-full! :)
I got personalised plates from the web for the kiddos and we also use the shoe box system, but each child gets a different coloured box. I only have 3 children and I plan to start implementing more of these stratergies as they get older. we haev the problem of changing favourite colours too. thanks for the inspiration.. cheers, Alexis
ReplyDeleteso i'm just wondering if purple is your way of saying "it's a girl!"? I mean not that a boy can't totally rock the color purple.
ReplyDeleteHi! I just clicked over from Whatever.
ReplyDeleteI love that each kid has their own toothpaste! My littlest always says "that toothpaste is too spicy!" whenever he uses his sister's grown-up toothpaste!
I think this is also a great idea! I wish I could do more things like this! I'm laking organization!
ReplyDeletemy mom did this with us 3 as well. though i hope you are able to stick with it! starting at a young age helps more I think. my mom tried to start this when we were in our pre-teen years. no one ever had the "right" color!
ReplyDeleteHi! I saw your cute valentine mailboxes on pinterest and clicked over. I LOVE your blog. It is so fun to see what another mom with a large'ish' family is doing to make things run smoothly. LOVE your color coding and I have thought more than once about giving away my bedroom to my 4 boys.... if only my bedroom were big enough! Thanks for the great ideas!
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea!
