if you've read this blog for long, you will know that there is very little in life that milo loves, as much as he loves NASCAR...and carbs.
well, we live close to this little thing called the daytona 500. have you heard of it?
i thought so.
mr. anderson decided to surprise milo and take him to the race.
i wasn't so sure that i approved of them going, but in the long run, i knew it would be something that milo would always remember...and i mean, come on. it's the kids dream to go to a live race. or meet joey logano.
little did we know that it would end up being the most memorable daytona 500 to date...rained out, rescheduled, crash on lap 1, track on fire. seriously.
this picture was taken right after we told him he was going.
after 8 years of being parents, we've learned that it's best to not tell the kids exciting things until the day of.
otherwise our conversations in the months/weeks/days leading up to the event look like this:
"do we get to go today?"
"no"
"do we get to go today?"
"no"
"do we get to go today?"
"no"
you get the point.

here he was, up and at 'em at 7:00 in the morning on sunday.
we knew it was supposed to rain, but everyone was hopeful that it would stop so the race could happen.
they kept pushing the race back and i kept thinking "what radar are they looking at? cause there is no break in the rain at all".
despite the rain on the first day, milo still enjoyed himself
(of course he did. he was in his element)
they came home late sunday night, soaking wet and totally tired.
but that didn't stop my boys from trying again the next day.
thumbs up and shirt tucked in. that's how he rolls.
they finally made it and better yet--the race started!
we watched from home...looking for daddy and milo.
even though the whole ordeal stressed mr. anderson out, i'm pretty sure they made some good memories.
with as much as milo loves NASCAR, i can't help but wonder if that will be him out on those tracks one day.
and that almost makes me pass out just thinking of such a thing.

Great pics! And how fun for Milo- he really will remember it forever!

ReplyDeleteI love these pictures, what a wonderful experience. I am with you on not telling the kids something exciting until the day of. I think it just leads to irritation for the parent when it should be exciting!
ReplyDeleteI am SURE it will be him out on those tracks one day, be prepared mama!

ReplyDeleteThe thought alone of my kids driving someday makes me want to hyperventilate... Nascar driver? That's heart attack material. haha Looks like he had the time of his life. :)
ReplyDeleteI told Jeff about Milo getting to go and we were watching and thinking about him the whole time! ...through the rain, reschedule, crash & fire. :) I love that he smiled the whole way through the adventure. :) And we do the SAME thing with the boys & exciting plans - we tell them NOTHING until we are DRIVING there. :)
ReplyDeleteI am sure milo was in HEAVEN!
ReplyDeleteman, how funny is it that your kid loves nascar. it's just hilarious considering we made/make fun of it often. but whatever. what a fun time for him!

ReplyDeleteHis smile is infectious, what a cutie!! My dad is going to his first nascar race this weekend (he's 60)...i'm pretty sure regardless of if they are 8, 20, 50, or 100....it's always the best. :)
ReplyDeleteSo fun and what a great memory to have!!!! I love it!
ReplyDeletealthough they ran into some road blocks, im sure it was the most perfect experience in the world for Milo. What a special experience. My oldest is obsessed with Titanic in the way that Milo is with nascar...can't go visit Titanic!
ReplyDeleteadorable!
ReplyDeleteLooks like he had a blast. My, almost 4 year old, watched that race...his first Nascar...on TV with me. He is totally into cars and keeps telling me he wants to drive...I'm praying for the pit crew. Is that bad? Ha!
ReplyDeleteIn all of the posts that I've followed (and there have been a lot), I have never seen Milo smile THIS much!!! Seriously, we all live to make our kid that happy.
ReplyDeleteYay for Milo!! Such a cute story with pics!! Crossing my fingers for ya this is just a stage!! Mr Anderson gets "Best Dad of the Year" award for this one! & thanks for the heads up about sharing exciting news with your kid!!
ReplyDeleteI swear he and Eli could be best friends. Eli goes to the Atlanta race every year with us. Send Milo up for a race weekend in September. He can hang with us anytime! :)
