meet our new lunchboxes.

i like to organize.
i also like to just throw my clothes all over the floor.
and sometimes i like piles of stuff.

my husband calls me a "selective organizer"...and well, he's kind of right.
i organize areas of my life that i think will help me stay sane.

my clothes all over the floor is just what i've grown up doing.
don't hang that shirt up honey---i won't be able to find it tomorrow when i go to put it on!
true story.
i know exactly where i put my things on the floor.  just like all my bobby pins...i purposefully put them in random places all over the house, so that in case i need one, i have one hiding in that room.  mr. anderson likes to play "let's find all the bobby pins".  i think that's rude.
look, i'm doing him a favor by not making him get up and get me one later.  i'm always thinking of him.

where was i going with this?
oh yes.  i like to organize!
basically i like to make my kids organize.  and i like to organize their life.
it's this little idol in my heart called control, but whatever.  at least i'm making our life easier for a while with my control.
so, when elsa came home from africa, i thought "oh my word, i have 5 kids...i need to get my act together!"
so, i gave each kid a color...and bought all their essentials in their color.
cups, bowls, plates, silverware, pillowcases, toothbrush cups, towels...you get the point?
look, i'm a bit of a germaphobe.  i don't like them sharing cups, pillows, towels.  that stuff is kind of grody, not gonna lie.
if my towel even has a hint of "someone has touched this" i won't use it.
i know, i'm extreme.
with school, i wanted to get them each a backpack with their own color, but they put their foot down and wouldn't let me.  dang you kids.
but i did win in the lunchbox department.

kelly from easy lunchboxes sent me a lunchbox for each school kid (in their color!) and a couple of containers for each box (in their color!)
i mean, it's kind of amazeballs.  you know i must be excited about these lunchboxes because i set them up like a family at a photo shoot.
my kids are all "uh, mom, why are you taking photos of our lunches?"
"because i am children, just go with it."
mommy does crazy things when she's excited.  like a cannonball.  but that's besides the point.

so, i'm not gonna lie.  these lunchboxes are pretty amazing.
i actually get excited about making lunches because i get to line them all up and they look so neat and pretty.  (i'm sure this excitement will eventually wear off when i'm making lunch #285, but i'll go with it for now).
they are also practical for our family...we have 2 kids with peanut allergies and 2 without...so, with their lunchboxes different colors, i don't accidentally send caedmon with a peanut butter sandwich instead of milo.  {shudder}
plus, these bad boys can go in the dishwasher and since we run the dishwasher about 18 times a day, i can just throw it in there...or i can hand wash them.  i still love to hand wash stuff.  takes me back to the day when i didn't have a dishwasher and life was much more peaceful and calm with only 2 children.  sigh.

it's nice to not have tons of ziploc baggies for trash too.  i feel good about not leaving that mark on the planet.  even though i throw 30 diapers away every day and i run my dishwasher 18 times in a day.
every little bit helps though, right?
{i'm a bit of an exaggerator on the dishwasher, mkay?}
the word on the street is that you can write on the tops of the containers with dry erase markers---little notes to your kids.
fun times!

my schedule is that i make lunches during the day, for the next day---that way i'm not up in the morning going crazy about lunches.  that stresses me out.
so, i usually always have a cute helper like this one:
here's a few more tidbits about these babies
(the lunchboxes, not my anderson babies--although i do treat these lunchboxes like they are a part of our family):
-no BPA, lead, vinyl or PVC
-washable cooler bag
-affordable, durable and eco-friendly
-dishwasher and microwave safe

now, while we are on the subject of lunches, i need some good, healthy lunch ideas.
please, do share what you feed your little ones!

  1. Your kids think it's weird that you took pictures of their lunches? My two year olds get into their booster chairs for a meal, then start telling me, "Mama take pictures of breakfast, then we say a prayer, then we eat." They also pretend to take pictures of food, as part of their imagination play. I guess that officially makes me a food blogger, right?

I have daydreams about the lunches I will pack for my kids, when they go off to school, so I am more than a little envious of the new lunchboxes!

    1. well, i'm obviously not a food blogger. taking pics of anything else, the kids would understand. but food is weird.

  4. Love those containers, wish I had some, but I have an entire cabinet devoted to lunch containers and can't really shove any more in right now. I have lots of bento style containers and don't use baggies, because, ewww, who wants squishy food?

Right now, my daughter's lunch contains: PB&J 1/2 sandwich, 2 slices of pepper, apples, pretzel sticks, greek yogurt, 2 starburst, and a water. My son's has PB 1/2 sandwich, turkey pepperoni, carrots&ranch, apples, pretzel sticks, 2 starburst, & water.

I make all the sandwiches on Sunday, put them in the freezer and pull them out the night before when I'm packing their lunch (which is usually while I'm cleaning up dinner). I also have a cheap handled container that fits in a fridge bin that I put all their lunch stuff in, then I just pull that out when I need to make lunch.

PS: There's a tiny Japanese store in Plano that sells lots of cheap, cute bento supplies - I hit it when we come to visit the inlaws.

    3. Sorry, in the article I linked above, she uses these super awesome freezeable Ball jars made from BPA-free plastic to store the smoothies. I thought they were perfect, and was eyeing them on Amazon, but tonight at Target, there they were, on an end cap, on clearance! Just wanted to pass the savings on to you. :)

  8. I never post... but I've had some years of making lunches "under my belt", so I will this time :)
We have no allergies in our (small!) school, so everything is okay this year, obviously you'd have to adjust things to accommodate any foods not allowed in your child's school.
We love to send (and the kids love to have!) leftovers for lunch. That is if we have any, and if it's something the kids like. Otherwise they get a sandwich (pb&j, meat+cheese, bologna+ketchup (ew)).
We try to always send 2 fruits per day - apple slices (always), strawberries, berries+granola+vanilla yogurt, peach slices, etc.
And then one other thing - yogurt cup, crackers, nacho chips (the plain ones), homemade muffins or cookies, granola bars.
When halloween comes around, the kids will also be able to choose one treat for dessert from the bucket.

  9. whole wheat pita pockets make great pouches for sandwiches with more stuff in them and they're perfect for kids to hold. Peanut butter, banana, little bit of honey and some ground flax seed for good measure (I've been putting that stuff on everything lately after seeing Jamie Nato's sandwich post). My fave pita sandwich combo: turkey, garlic hummus, avacado and some red onion. Ok, not really a kid sandwich but if your kids eat avacado, you could make a kid friendly version. My rambling isn't helping you at all....

  10. I was going to order those on AMazon, but they sold out beforeIhad the chance!
I bought sort of the same thing at walmart.
our lunches have been simple this week because we have had way too much going on,
we did pb & J, cashews, apples, bananas, chips n' salsa, mini grapes, raspberries,
homeade sugar cookies that my girls made over the weekend, chocolate covered raisins, choc. covered
pretzels....next week I hope to do turkey, cheese and lettuce on sub buns with this sauce I make using mayo, balsamic vinaigrette and basil leaves chopped...I also want to do cucumber and carrots or broccoli with some type of sauce, maybe hummus or a bean dip. soooo many lunch ideas on wendolonia.com!~

  12. Brilliant.

I am a selective organizer too!!!!!

People assume I have a perfectly organized home. When they see it, they think it isn't. I knwo what is in every single pile and corner. I know.

Lord willing I will someday have children and I love your organize-by-color idea!

  17. I'm the same way - I organize certain things but not enough to satisfy my hubby's OCD! And my bobby pins, are everywhere but I know where. Then my hubby "cleans them up" and then I can't find them when I need them! Lol!

    1. yes! i hate when he picks them up. duh, mr. anderson---i needed that there.

  18. I like your method of organizing. And your way of keeping bobby pins here and there? That's genius, if you ask me. Seeing as I'm living at home (with my parents), I don't think that'll go over too well (my dad would likely end up sitting on one or something). But I'll keep that tip in mind when I move out!

And I also love those lunch containers, too! I was to girl (and still am, for the matter), who hated her foods to touch. And I love that the lids come in different colors!

  19. You are such a smart cookie with colour coding the kid's stuff.

Olive can't be walking just yet, she is still a baby but it's adorable when you photograph her standing up holding onto soemthing.

  20. I am excited to read lunch ideas, since this is our first year with school lunches to think about. And the nut-free thing is kind of killing my pb+j go to.
So far my boy is digging cream cheese and turkey sandwiches, strawberries, carrots, orange slices, animal crackers, fig bars, honey pretzel sticks and string cheese. Nothing overly creative. :)

Also, I LOVE being organized, but I am a big fat failure in the department. I do know what is in my piles though, and I am also a big bobby pin hider.
    Happy Friday :)

  22. LOVE these containers - life changing - in that I don't have to pack my kids lunches - they can now because they are so user friendly. Just be careful, if you have a child with man-paws like I do, the corner of the lid can crack under too much pressure. I love them, I love how easy they are and how they store so nice and tidy. I'm all about tidy storage. Happy Organizing.

Oh and we're a big soup family - so thermos' make a lot of appearances in our lunch boxes. It's a nice switch from sandwiches or for antisandwich children, like my daughter.

    Happy Organizing!

  24. I found some really cool salad containers a long time ago. I don't even remember where now I've had them so long. My senior in high school (who was Olives size like a month ago lol) loves taking a salad & grapes for her lunch. She said all the kids @ her table were freaking out about the cool salad container. U put the dressing in the lid & just push top of lid when ready to eat & shake container to mix.

  25. love the lunchboxes...and i love even more that we are both selective about our organization(OCD for me).
    makes me feel normal! :)

  29. I think I might be falling in love! :) Loving that I'm not the only mom feeling these feelings! We went with PlanetBox this year and are loving it. I'm just glad not to have individual boxes to wash like we did last year. A single container works so much better for us! My kids have signature colors and favorite colors. Their signature color is the color I picked for their items to be when they were toddlers/babies, and their favorite color is what they picked for themselves when they were old enough. I still smile every time one of my little ones asks someone what color their signature color is. They just assume everyone has a signature and a favorite color! :)

  30. Love this post and all the comments! We bough these last school year, only I lost my lunch making zeal around October. Also, I love that I can spot my boys anywhere on campus when they're carrying those bright, happy lunch boxes! And I didn't know that they were machine washable?! (Is that gross to admit?)

  35. my husband has the same weird issue with my bobby pins being everywhere. (what's the deal with our husbands?) he throws them away if he sees them so i really do have to hide them. i also organize the same way you do. i know where stuff is and he's not allowed to move it. also, when you were writing about somebody using your towel besides you it made me think of a conversation my hubs and i had about a towel ring in the bathroom. we just moved in and there was no hand towel holder but there were two hooks and a bar on the back of the door. i said why not hang the hand towel on the bar on the back of the door? he said "ew no. i don't want somebody (getting confused about which towel to use) and wiping their hands on the towel i use to dry my balls." i had to laugh...am i allowed to type "balls" in the comment section?

  37. I totally have these same lunch boxes/containers!!! and I, too, LOVE them! I got them when I noticed the "bento" lunch craze - maybe two years ago? anyway, this year I only have to pack one lunch - since the oldest is homeschooled, therefore she, the preschooler, and the 2yr old eat at home! but they're awesome for packing lunch on the go any 'old time!

hmmm ... good lunch ideas - I made jello recently and poured some right into one of the little compartments, then stuck it in the fridge to "set"! does that count as an idea? I don't have any great ideas, other than saying that I love these containers because they help me pack lunch the way I love ... a little bit of a variety of foods!
